Bio

Chukwuma Okolie is a geospatial professional, data scientist and licensed surveyor with about 13 years of combined experience in academia, the public and non-profit sectors. He has a PhD in Geomatics from the University of Cape Town, and research interests in data fusion, geospatial artificial intelligence, GIScience, environmental modeling and climate change.

He is also an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK). Presently, Chukwuma is a data advisor with the AMALI Data Programme at the African Centre for Cities (ACC), University of Cape Town. In this role, he provides coaching and technical assistance to African Mayors and their staff on data and performance management. In 2023, Chukwuma was the lead data advisor for the cities of Kitwe and Lusaka in Zambia. In both cities, he facilitated the creation of data inventories, data quality assessments and the launch of data reporting tools, in support of mayoral legacy goals for improved solid waste management (SWM). Chukwuma was recently announced as one of the 50 Geospatial World Rising Stars of 2024.

He is the recipient of several awards including the xyHT ‘40 under 40 Geospatial Leaders’ (2017), and the Space Generation Advisory Council – Space Technology for Earth Applications (SGAC-STEA) project group Member of the Year award (2022). Outside AMALI, Chukwuma has worked as a lecturer in several universities, teaching digital mapping, geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, photogrammetry, land surveying, and technical communication. He has also supervised several student research theses. Chukwuma is a team member in the ‘Climate adaptation in the Gulf of Guinea’ research project funded by the Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability at Harvard University. He is highly published with over 80 papers in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings and other media.
